As night fell anxious relatives, friends and neighbours were still crowded outside barricades blocking off the building. So far 31 women and children of various ages have been released. But militants were still holding hundreds of hostages inside the besieged school in the North Ossetia region town of Beslan. Beslan, a town of about 30,000, is not far from Chechnya, where separatist rebels have been fighting Russian forces since 1999 in the second of two wars in a decade, and suspicion in the raid fell on Chechen militants or their supporters, although no claim of responsibility was made.
