Neustadt (Breuberg) In the northern Odenwald, at the border to Lower Franconia lies Breuberg-Neustadt, the”City around the castle”. The Castle Breuberg built in the 12th century is one of the best preserved and prettiest castles in the south of Germany. At the foot of the castle lies the former craftsman city “Neustadt im Odenwald”, today one of the five suburbs of Breuberg. Once erected as the residence for the servants of the castle lords, the town as early as the 14th century developed into a fortified market and country town with its own jurisdiction after being granted Town privileges by the Emperor Karl IV in 1378. Originating from this era and unique in Germany is the wooden market cross with the symbols of market peace and market justice.
