Speakers: Natalia Krupenko, PhD – Associate Professor of Nutrition Natalia Krupenko, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Nutrition who joined the UNC Nutrition Research Institute in 2014. Her research focuses on the role of folate (vitamin B9) in promoting human health and preventing disease. Folate deficiency has been linked to increased risk of neural tube defects, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, while emerging research has raised concerns about potential adverse effects of over-supplementation. Krupenko’s work aims to identify effective ways to harness the health-protective properties of folate while minimizing potential risks. Her research has been published in more than 35 peer-reviewed, high-impact journals and presented at national and international scientific meetings. She earned her doctorate in bioorganic chemistry from the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Byelorussian Academy of Sciences, and holds a joint appointment with the Department of Nutrition at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, UNC–Chapel Hill. Madeline Hall Childress – Graduate Student, Krupenko Lab Madeline Hall Childress is a doctoral graduate student in the Natalia Krupenko lab at the UNC Nutrition Research Institute. She joined the NRI in 2019 and began her doctoral studies in 2020. Childress earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama, majoring in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Spanish. Her research examines the role of folate in supporting human health and preventing disease.
