After yet another NBA Finals of poor defense, LeBron allowed Durant to collectively shoot over 54/43/90 across the 2012-2017-2018 NBA Finals. Durant is the only person under the non-shortened 3PT line to shoot 50/40/90 for an NBA Finals career (Penny Hardaway did so in 1995). LeBron resorted to hiding on defense away from Kevin Durant for much of the NBA Finals, which may actually have been the best decision for the Cavaliers considering Durant shot well over 50% when guarded by LeBron in both the 2012 and 2017 NBA Finals. Even then, the non-offensive threats from the Warriors still beat LeBron on numerous occasions. Let's see how the myth of LeBron guarding 1-5 well stacks up with the facts. 1. LeBron has been outscored in 4 of 9 NBA Finals by the other team's top perimeter player Parker 2007 Terry 2011 in 11 less MPG Durant 2012 and 2017 2. LeBron allowed Durant to become the only career 50/40/90 shooter for a career in the NBA Finals (2012-2017-2018 Finals combined) 3. LeBron allowed Kawhi Leonard to have the highest FG% of any FMVP in history at 61.2% in 2014. Leonard only averaged 13 ppg on 52% and 13 ppg on 48% for the season and Rounds 1-3 respectively 4. Up to 2018, LeBron allowed Leonard and Durant to be 8th and 9th all-time in career Finals FG%, with all of their Finals games against LeBron. If we only include players who averaged 15+ PPG for a Finals career, those two are 3rd and 4th behind Shaq and Wilt. 5. In 7 of 9 NBA Finals, the other team's top perimeter player that LeBron guarded averaged a higher PPG and FG% against LeBron in the Finals compared to the regular season 2007 Parker 2011 Terry 2012 Durant 2014 Leonard 2015 Iguodala 2017 Durant 2018 Durant All of them also increased both their PPG and FG% in the Finals compared to Rounds 1-3 as well as the season, with the exception of 2018 Durant going from 29.0 to 28.8 PPG but on much higher FG% of 53% compared to 48% for 3 rounds.
