Episode 28 (4:53) of our Overland Rigs Mitsubishi Fuso Canter overland build pushes the camper conversion forward with one of the most dramatic modifications yet: cutting a large opening in the cab roof to install a pass-through window/door, allowing seamless movement between the cab and camper body without ever stepping outside—no matter rain, snow, dust, or darkness. Measure twice, cut once! [0:00] We start by explaining the purpose and safety benefits of this feature for real-world overland travel, then show the careful planning and cutting process to make it happen. [1:10] The camper frame receives its first major insulation layer—essential for temperature control, noise reduction, and comfort during cold nights in the Rockies or hot days in Baja. [1:38] Excitement hits a snag: the pass-through window unit is oversized for the opening we cut, forcing a round of problem-solving, measuring, and re-design discussions. While troubleshooting, we also talk through the rooftop tent integration and how the whole system will function once complete. [3:03] Progress rolls on: additional insulation is added, the heavy-duty spare tire bracket and tire are mounted in their final elevated position (officially christened the “Crown Jewel” of the build), and the camper door undergoes custom modifications to align perfectly with our layout and swing path. [4:12] We detail the bolting strategy: the entire camper body will be securely fastened to the reinforced deck we previously built in the truck bed. That same deck already proved its strength by carrying 1,300 lbs of load over a demanding 5,000 km round trip—no flex, no cracks, no worries. [4:45] Outro - Episode 29 will drop in a few days. This episode is all about bold cuts, quick thinking, and steady progress toward the ultimate adventure rig.
