A power injector is much better for this purpose than manual injection techniques. The use of a power injector also eliminates personnel exposure to scattered radiation since the infusion pumps can be started and stopped from an adjacent room by remote control. Good results have been obtained with dual-head injector systems ( Fig. 191.1 ). After the contrast bolus has been injected, a dual-head system can flush the injection tubing and the afferent arm veins of the patient with an isotonic saline chaser from a second syringe to reduce the necessary amount of CM. This not only lowers costs but also reduces the potential nephrotoxic effects of some contrast media
