He draws profound inspiration from his mother and first guru, Sangeetha Bhushanam Srimati Thillainayaki Kanakaratnam, and his father, Kalabhushanam Subramaniam Kanakaratnam, a noted poet, writer, and orator. Sarangan received his advanced training in the revered gurukula tradition under the legendary Padma Shri Sangeetha Kalanidhi Palghat Prof. K. V. Narayanasamy, a direct musical descendant of Saint Tyagaraja Swami’s disciples. Following his guru’s passing, he continued his tutelage under Mrs. Padma Narayanasamy until 2008, further deepening his mastery of the sampradaya. In addition to his traditional training, Sarangan has achieved an exceptional record of academic excellence in Indian classical music. His qualifications include a Diploma in Music (First Class, Tamil Music College, Chennai), B.A. in Music (First Class, Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore), M.A. in Music (First Class, University of Madras), and M.Phil in Music (Gold Medal, University of Madras). He is currently in the final stages of completing his Ph.D. in Music. His musical journey began with a first prize at the 1999 State-level Music Competition conducted by Chinmaya Mission, Tamil Nadu. Since then, he has released eight CDs and earned numerous honors, including Thirumurai Isaithilagam (Chennai), Deivathamizhisaichelvar (Thiruvavaduthurai Aadheenam, India), Isavendhan (Canada), and Isai Gnanachchudar (UK). Sarangan has performed extensively around the world — at institutions such as Bharathiar University and the University of Madras in India, Goldsmiths University of London, and other major venues across Europe and Canada. Among the many highlights of his illustrious career are performances before India’s former Presidents, His Excellency K. R. Narayanan and His Excellency Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. Alongside his performances, Sarangan has made significant contributions as an educator. He served as a part-time lecturer in the Institute of Correspondence Education, University of Madras (2007–2008), and since 2008, he has been teaching at the London Tamil Centre. In 2018, he was invited to serve as an adjudicator for the Carnatic category at the prestigious Watford Music Festival in London. He is also the Founder and Director of AarohanA Temple of Aesthetic Fine Arts (UK), established in 2009, which promotes South Indian classical arts and nurtures emerging talent. Through his performances, compositions, and teaching, Manipallavam K. Sarangan continues to bring the 3,000-year tradition of South Indian Carnatic music to contemporary audiences around the world. His music embodies both discipline and devotion — a reflection of his belief that “Music is a universal language to reach silence.”
