Turbo Outrun 1990 SEGA PC VGA - Win Vs Game / Loss Vs Porsche 15min 48s This is the VGA (256 Colour) version, running under DoxBox. Beat the game with a final time of: 15mins 48sec - Defeated by the Porsche 959. I do still own the original boxed version on 5 1/4" floppy disks. HISTORY and BACKSTORY: I'm uploading this as it's one of my favourite classic games for several reasons. It was the first boxed PC game I ever owned (that's important because back then most games were "shared" around.) It was also my first SEGA title ever owned - which for a PC gamer also meant a lot, as it was both an Arcade and a home SEGA title. I played this with the EGA 16 Colour version, which is why I still prefer this version today. The map of America is very pink in the VGA version and although LCDs don't represent the colours correctly compared to the CRTs of the day, they are similar. There was a mod in the manual that told you how to increase your pc speaker sound volume. I used that mod with help, to hook up 2 x 8inch Guitar speakers to my AT PC. The sound in the video is Soundblaster/Adlib, the PC speaker beeps were far less complex to that. Later I added a genuine Creative Labs 8-Bit Mono Sound Blaster (which was probably their first version). I ran this soundcard through our full size ~1.2 metre x ~1 metre wide loudspeakers and amp in the lounge room. It cost around $500 AUD which calculates as $836.38 AUD with inflation accounted for, and $634.60 USD today, 27/07/2021. The game was purchased in San Franciso or California and brought back by plane to Australia as a present for me. It wasn't readily available in Australia at the time, and if it was, I never saw it in any shops. I was never able to finish this game back when I was playing it as a kid. It wasn't until decades later when I rediscovered the game, that I became determined to finally finish it, and beat the Porsche (see the next video). I think I used to get about as far as San Antonio or Dallas. The game itself is lacking in a lot of areas, and there aren't many reasons why anyone would particularly like this game, especially in this era. The game induces pain and frustration but stubborness allowed me to be able to defeat it. Not only are the graphics simple compared to all the other versions, but the difficulty is extreme. It seems as if this game was designed not to be beaten and to ensure it was a highly profitable arcade coin earner. The controls use either keyboard or mouse, and I had previously used both extensively. You can also use either manual or auto, but in my view with auto transmission you will never successfully be able to beat the game. Cornering is the biggest problem in the game, as your tyres constantly overheat and cause you to spin out. The method I've used to beat the game, the upgrade path and the sequence is my own design. I've never seen anyone else beat the game on the internet, although I'm sure some others have. In around 2016 I had beaten the game fully vs the Porsche, however I did not record the video. Along with tyre temperatures you also need to monitor your engine heat and rpm level to avoid blowing the engine. If you lose a round, you lose the girl. She will move to the Porsche 959 and vice versa the next time you win a round. My two best (recorded times are 15:32 and 15:29 - upcoming video). If you fail to reach the checkpoint under 16 minutes then the game will end, dropping you back to the highscore screen. This means you need to average roughly 60 seconds or less per area, as you traverse the United States in your F40 glory. Which at the time wasn't a licensed car. This was later rectified when Ferrari made it clear they weren't happy with the likeness. The ending of this game has to be one of the most disappointing ever. Especially for the amount of effort required to win. I believe the arcade and console versions have slightly better endings. I do also own the original Megadrive Japanese imported version of this game (16 bit) which should have the better ending, but have not yet played it. The packaging is full colour and very nicely presented. Also note that my old video with this game (from ~2016) was not a successful win against the game, although I did make it to the last level. That's why I'm uploading this VGA version and the EGA fully completed vs. Porsche Win version (15:29). I can finally put this game to rest knowing it's been truly beaten. 1: New York 2: Washington D.C. 3: Pittsburgh 4: Indianapolis 5: Chicago 6: St. Louis 7: Memphis 8: Atlanta 9: Miami 10: New Orleans 11: San Antonio 12: Dallas 13: Oklahoma City 14: Denver 15: Grand Canyon 16: Los Angeles Tags: Sega, sega retro, Turbo Outrun, PC, PC gaming, Ferrari F40, Arcade, Arcade Gaming, Red, Porsche, Porsche 959
