Two temples. Two artistic marvels. One timeless legacy in stone. In Rajasthan, the breathtaking Ranakpur Jain Temple rises like a marble dream in the Aravali hills. Built in the 15th century, the Chaturmukh temple spreads across three floors and contains 1444 pillars, each carved differently. Historian and author William Dalrymple describes it as one of the most intricate and gorgeous sculptural spaces anywhere, astonishingly intact even after centuries. From impossible filigree and endlessly detailed columns to a deliberately crooked pillar placed to remind mortals that perfection belongs only to the divine, Ranakpur is a masterpiece of vision, faith and craftsmanship. Far to the south in Tamil Nadu stands the little known Azhagiya Nambi Rayar Temple at Thirukurungudi, a sacred Vishnu shrine praised by ancient Tamil poet saints. Set near the Western Ghats and nurtured by centuries of devotion, the temple contains over 2000 artworks in granite and wood. Its Chitra Gopuram, mythic beasts, epic scenes, maritime carvings and mysterious stone spheres trapped inside yali mouths reveal extraordinary artistic confidence from the 16th and 17th centuries. One is a marble forest of pillars. The other, a hidden jewel of southern sacred art. Together, they tell the story of two of India’s most remarkable artistic wonders. -------- Ranakpur Jain Temple Chaturmukh temple Ranakpur 1444 pillars temple William Dalrymple Azhagiya Nambi Rayar Temple Thirukurungudi temple Tamil Nadu hidden temple Indian temple art Rana Kumbha Dharnashah Ranakpur architecture Jain temple Rajasthan Thirumangai Azhwar Vishnu temple Tamil Nadu Chitra Gopuram Yali sculpture temple
