Pianist Yung-Yi (YY) Chen studying in the United States plays 【Liszt: “Vallee d’Obermann” from “Années de Pèlerinage: Première annèe: Suisse”】 in his Annual Piano Recital on July 31th, 2022 in the National Concert Hall at Taipei, TAIWAN; (中英文曲解:陳咏懌 撰寫) “Could I embody and unbosom now. That which is most within me, could I wreck. My thoughts upon expression, and thus throw. Soul, heart, mind, passions, feelings, strong or weak. All that I would have sought, and all I seek. Bear, know, feel and yet breathe into one word. And that one word was Lightning, I would speak; But as it is, I live and die unheard. With a most voiceless thought, sheathing it as a sword". Lord Byron “Childe Harold's Pilgrimage” “What do I want? Who am I? What do I ask of nature?" Étienne Pivert de Senancour “Obermann” "Vallée d'obermann” is a piece from Liszt “Années de Pèlerinage -Première année: Suisse”, or “Years of Pilgrimage-First Year: Switzerland”. “Years of Pilgrimage” is a set of pieces inspired by the traveling experience Liszt had (for the first year, his stay in Switzerland from 1835 with Marie d’Agoult) and the literary works of that time. For example, In "Vallée d'obermann”, two above listed quotations, Lord Bryon “ Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage”, and Sennacour’s “Obermann” are listed on the top of the score to show the literary connection of the piece. “Vallee d’obermann”, in Sennacour’s work, is a fictional place where protagonist Obermann goes to when he is stressed out with the society around him, so he can have a philosophical conversation with himself in nature. Therefore, the piece started with the heavy, pesante character, and the constantly changing and unresolved harmony in the first part resembles the endlessly stress and the depression Obermann had in his current situation. After that, he started his wonder and the search for solutions through a series of self-questioning and self-debating in the beautiful nature, and later, an intense thunderstorm. Eventually, he sadly figures out no matter how hard he tries, he could not find a solution that perfectly solves the problem. Because no matter how much the things improve tempertily under a method, it will not reach perfection and the problem eventually raises again. (Interpretations:written by YY Chen)
