Real-time update from Redbud Surgery Center! Today, Dr. Julie Sprunt and I are performing a very special case—the first sensation-preserving mastectomy with nerve grafting at Redbud. I scrubbed in earlier to help dissect and preserve some of the patient’s nerves for sensation. Dr. Sprunt is now going to finish taking care of her lymph nodes and mastectomies, with pathology available on-site. Once she finishes her portion, I’ll scrub back in to graft the nerves to the patient’s nipple, aiming to preserve sensation, and place tissue expanders as a temporary step for her breast reconstruction. This case is particularly meaningful because it represents what we can achieve with the resources and flexibility Redbud provides. After being quoted $80,000 at a hospital for the nerve grafting alone, this patient was able to have the surgery here for significantly less, making her dream of sensation preservation a reality. Although paying for the nerve grafts is still costly, we’re grateful to make it more accessible and provide this incredible level of care.
