Horse and carriage loaded with fresh hay passing in front of the flags and WWII memorial STORYLINE: US, NATO and European Union flags flew above Deveselu on Wednesday, a day before a new US missile defence system becomes operational in the southern Romanian village. NATO and US officials say the new system, which has been under development for years, is aimed at protecting Europe from ballistic missile threats, especially potential long-range threats from the Middle East. They say the missile shield - which is able to track and shoot down incoming missiles - is purely defensive and is, in any case, powerless against Russia's large stockpile of intercontinental ballistic missiles. Russia is, however, adamantly opposed to having the advanced military system on its doorstep and the development is certain to further exacerbate tensions between Russia and the West that are more strained than at any time since the Cold War. While the Kremlin doesn't view the NATO missile defence system as a threat to its nuclear forces in its current limited shape, it fears that the US-led missile shield may eventually erode the deterrent potential of Russian nuclear forces when it grows more powerful in the future. Russian officials have shrugged off the claim that the planned missile shield is intended to fend off missile threats from Iran, and President Vladimir Putin has pointed at the determination of the US and NATO to pursue the project even after a nuclear deal with Iran as a proof that it's aimed against Russia. Residents in Deveselu hope the new base will bring jobs and security to their village. One resident said he hoped to work at the base but another was worried the installation might make the village a target. For 68-year-old Deveselu resident, Marin Palos, the US presence guarantees security from Russian interference. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
