Long ago, Lord Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, came to this sacred land after defeating the demon king Ravana. Though Rama was victorious, Ravana was a learned Brahmin, and Lord Rama felt the need to seek forgiveness for the sin of killing him. To purify himself, Lord Rama decided to worship Lord Shiva. On this holy land, he asked Hanuman to bring a Shiva Lingam from Mount Kailash. As time passed and Hanuman did not return, Goddess Sita created a Shiva Lingam from sand with her own hands.
