Physician Identification Badges to Address Misidentification and Bias

Dr. Emily Olson, Chief Resident in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, shares results of her study appearing in the April 2022 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where after the implementation of role-clarifying identification badges, female residents noted a decrease from 82% to 18% in weekly incidents of role misidentification and residents underrepresented in medicine noted a decrease from about 85% to 23% in weekly incidents of role misidentification. Dr. Olson found that patients appreciated the better understanding of their care-team members and residents noted an increase in confidence which in turn benefitted their performance.
