By lifting up the upper aperture/diaphragm filter assembly, you might see that your slits will close all the way. If you push the stage down all the way you might see that your slits close all the way. Most of the time the issue is either in the upper push rod needing a slight adjustment or the stage is not going down all the way. *There should not be a gap or space between the bottom of the upper push rod and the stage when you turn the crank knob all the way to zero. The upper push rod should always be resting on the stage surface. **Unfortunately, the newest style H/S towers with the stage that can be lifted off it's column have issues seating all the way down. You can try removing the bearing set and sanding inside the stage chasm to remove any pitting from the bearings travelling up and down. Sometimes it is a factory design issue. IMO, the old style was better! Other brands of tower slit lamps are similar to the Haag-Streit slit lamp and operate similarly.
