At age 33, Kindelán had reached the final and was now to face Britain's 17 year-old promise Amir Khan. The fight began with Khan showing his talent, getting to a single point lead at the end of the first round. During the second round though, the Cuban athlete came back to dominate the combat with a five point margin at 14-9. Keeping control of the scoreboard until the end of the fight, Mario Kindelán took the Olympic gold medal for the second time with a 30-22 score.
