The Leyte Sab-a Peatland Forest is one of the Philippines’ two major peatland sites. It plays an important role in regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide and serves as home to many species. Current attempts to convert it into agricultural land threaten our biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides particularly its carbon sequestration functions. To counter this, the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction Philippines Office, our grantee, is implementing the Leyte Sab-a Peatland Forest Restoration Initiative, a 4-year project that began in 2018. Anchored on the principles of revegetation, rewetting, and revitalization of livelihood, this project aims to protect, restore, and sustainably manage 1,936 hectares of the major peatland site. This initiative began with empowering local communities and people’s organizations to establish and effectively manage forest nurseries. Through this, the sources of healthy seedlings in revegetation efforts increased. To learn more about the restoration efforts in the Leyte Sab-A Peatland Forest, check out this video.
