"Not to Be Forgotten: Legal Lessons of the Japanese Internment" is the theme of the 2017 Ninth Circuit Civics Contest. This video features interviews of judges of the Ninth Circuit who are particularly knowledgeable about the Japanese internment. Senior Circuit Judge Mary M. Schroeder and retired District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel of the Northern District of California rendered decisions in the 1980s that led to the exoneration of internment resisters Fred Korematsu and Gordon Hirabayashi. As a young boy, Senior Circuit Judge A. Wallace Tashima lived in an Arizona internment camp for more than three years. The video is hosted by District Judge Edward M. Chen of the Northern District of California.
