An Examination of Hanukkah in John Chapter 10 Assemblies of Yahweh in Bethel, PA Need to Repent of their Error The verse in John chapter 10 that is often used as supposed evidence that Yahshua celebrated Hanukkah says that he was "walking" in the temple in the porch of Solomon (vs. 23) . Do you see that? It doesn't say that He observed that man-made feast along with those "unbelieving Jews" who were there; Jews who he said were "NOT his sheep" (vs. 26). Again I repeat.... they were not his sheep! Rather, they were the "synagogue of Satan" ( Revelation 2:9, 3:9 ); unbelieving Jews who actually took up stones to try and stone Yahshua ( John 10:31 ). Yahshua walked and taught on the temple grounds on "many occasions", often daily. Especially when there was a crowd gathered there. And so John chapter 10 cannot be used as a proof text that we should be celebrating the Hanukkah festival. That passage simply states what time it was, not what He kept. There is no participation, no ritual, no sanctifying of this later-developed festival. Just because something is "Jewish" doesn't automatically make it ok. Rabbinic and Talmudic Judaism is not the faith of your Bible! There is absolutely "no evidence" in "scripture" that Hanukkah was sanctioned and sanctified by Almighty Yahweh. NONE! You never see Yahshua's Apostles keeping it either. And that is for a reason. Lets Review Now With The Scriptures: Luke 21:37 (NET)(WEB) ~ So "every day" {Yahshua} was teaching in the temple courts. So what and who cares if Yahshua was on the temple grounds on Hanukkah in John chapter 10. That proves nothing! It certainly doesn't prove we should be keeping the man-made Hanukkah that adds to the Torah. Titus 1:13-14 (WEB) ~ Reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, not paying attention to "Jewish fables" ( like the miracle of the oil ) and commandments of men who turn away from the truth ( like the unscriptural 9-branch menorah ). Within Judaism during Hanukkah, they recite a blessing for lighting the candles. It goes like this: Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav vetzivanu l’hadlik ner (shel) hanuka. Translation: “Blessed are You, Yahweh, our Elohim, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light the Hanukkah candle[s].” Where in the scriptures does Yahweh tell us to light the Hanukkah candles? He doesn't! And so not only is Judaism adding to Torah with their 9 branch menorah, they are adding to scripture something that the Torah simply does not say. And so once again, "JEWISH FABLES!" Revelation 2:9 (WEB) ~ I know your works, oppression, and your poverty - but you are rich - and the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews, and they are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.... ( Referring to the disobedient and unbelieving Jews who reject Yahshua and the false worship of Judaism. ) Revelation 3:9 (TLV) ~ Behold, I will cause those of the synagogue of Satan — who say they are Jewish and are not, but lie. Behold, I will cause them to come and bow down before your feet, so that they acknowledge that I have loved you! ( "I have loved you" ~ Referring to "Believing Israel" or "Messianic Israel" ) Romans 2:28-29 (WEB) ~ For he is not a "Jew" who is one outwardly ( as in Revelation 2:9 and 3:9 ), neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one "inwardly" and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit not in the letter; whose praise is not from men, but from Elohim.
