Karl Kiffe "Master of the Drums" 1944 from "Youth Aflame."

Excerpt from the 1944 film "Youth Aflame," featuring Karl Kiffe as "Master of the Drums.” At age 14, Kiffe (7/6/1927–5/10/2004) was a semi-final winner in the Los Angeles regional Gene Krupa Drum Contest. Karl was unable to compete in the finals, due to the draft, so Gene Krupa had Slingerland ship Karl a set of Radio King drums…which were also the prize given to the winner of the finals, Louie Bellson! Karl is playing those Radio Kings in this film. He then was featured in the Our Gang "Canteen Kids" band and was in a couple films with this group of young talented musicians. The band also performed at the Hollywood Canteen, opening for Harry James, Kay Kyser, and other bands. He then played with the individual Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey bands (the Original Dorseyland Jazz Band), Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, and Lionel Hampton. He also played with Ella Fitzgerald, Zoot Sims, Stan Getz, Sol Yaged, June Christy, and many others. He eventually settled in Las Vegas and backed various local & touring acts until retiring in 1995.
