Case hardening is a specialised process in the field of heat treatment that has been conceived to improve the mechanical properties of steel. It is a carburising process that involves the heating of the steel part to high temperatures in a carbon-rich medium. The process begins with the heating of the steel part to temperatures between 850°C and 950°C in an atmosphere containing carbon. The exact temperature and duration of the heating depend on the desired hardness and depth of the carburised layer. The heating of the part is followed up with a quick cooling process, typically quenching in oil. This leads to the formation of a hard, wear-resistant layer on the surface of the part, while the core remains tough. Case hardening is particularly suitable for parts that are subjected to high loads and great wear, such as gears and ball bearings. Unlike other heat treatment processes, case hardening allows for precise control of the mechanical properties of the treated part. It strikes an excellent balance between hardness and toughness, turning it into an important process in modern metallurgy and in numerous industries, including automotive, aerospace, and mechanical engineering.
