Asian elephant Wanda celebrated her 7th anniversary at ARK 2000 on April 8, 2012. She spent the day sleeping in the sun, grazing in the hills, and later in the day her keepers presented her with her favorite bran cake decorated with Jelly Bellies and fruit. Seven years ago, after a 3-day journey that took them across the country, Wanda and Winky, two Asian elephants from the Detroit Zoo, arrived safely at ARK 2000 early in the morning on April 8, 2005. A caravan of their keepers and caregivers, veterinarians and other staff, and a large array of their favorite toys accompanied them. After Winky's death in 2008, Wanda discovered Gypsy, PAWS' bull elephant Nicholas' former companion, and the two have become inseparable, roaming the hills, chirping, squeaking and trumpeting when they are temporarily separated. The Detroit Zoo was the nation's first major animal facility to retire its elephants solely on ethical grounds. When Detroit Zoo made the controversial decision to send two Asian elephants to ARK 2000, they also made a commitment to assist and support PAWS in the care of the elephants. In the years since the elephants arrived, staff, veterinarians and administrators from the zoo have visited their beloved elephants and provided financial support. Collaboration with specialists from progressive zoos like Detroit provides welcome information and educational benefits for all of us. Happy anniversary Wanda!
