In this beautifully curated showroom, we had the honor of installing De Gournay’s hand-painted Pietra Dura wallcovering — a design inspired by centuries-old stone inlay craftsmanship, expressed through layered brushwork, tonal depth, and remarkable trompe l’oeil detailing. Bringing artwork of this caliber onto the walls and ceiling requires a thoughtful, deliberate process that respects both the material and the architecture it meets. To begin the installation, our team at TP Decorating fully lined the ceiling and the walls to create a perfectly stable foundation. With hand-painted papers, even the smallest imperfections can affect panel alignment, so establishing this base is essential for a seamless result. Once the surfaces were prepared, we began the careful process of dry-fitting each panel, studying how the motifs connect, and mapping out the sequence so the design flows as the artist intended. One of the most technical challenges was the ceiling. The artwork needed to land in perfect symmetry, meeting precisely at the center of the room. This required millimeter-accurate layout work, including a circular cut around the existing plaster medallion. Cutting hand-painted wallpaper around a plastered centerpiece demands exceptional control — preserving the artwork while shaping it to the architecture. From there, we navigated a curved dome in one corner, matching the pattern over a compound surface where even slight tension can distort the artwork. Throughout the perimeter, the trims and edge details required precise hand-cutting to maintain continuity. Every shade, line, and stone-inlay illusion had to transition cleanly from one panel to the next. On the walls, each drop had to align so the brushwork and tonal gradients carried uninterrupted across corners, around openings, and through the architectural breaks that define the space. Projects like this remind us that installing a hand-painted mural is as much an art as it is a craft. It requires patience, respect for the material, technical expertise, and a steady commitment to excellence at every step. We’re proud to have brought this vision to life for De Gournay and grateful for the opportunity to work with artwork that elevates every space it touches. Thank you for watching.
