Taxi Payment Fraud This is a 2 or more persons fraud operation. One acts as a taxi driver while the other acts as a taxi passenger. Here is what happens: 1) The taxi passenger approaches a victim saying they can’t pay their fare because the taxi cab driver won’t accept cash. 2) The passenger offers to give the victim cash in exchange for the use of the victim’s debit card. 3) The driver gives the victim a hacked debit terminal and the victim enters their PIN. The terminal doesn’t work and the driver gives the victim back a different debit card which was switched while the victim wasn't looking. 4) They now have a valid PIN and victim's debit card to withdraw funds from. Remember that all real cab companies will accept cash. Things to do: Call your bank or financial institution immediately Report the fraud to police If possible, try to take pictures or video of the suspects/car (without compromising your safety) Deactivate the ‘tap’ feature on all your payment cards To make a police report online: https://www.torontopolice.on.ca/core/
