Pesach 5782 Erev Pesach: Custom to Learn This Lesson Of רבי שמשון מאוסטראפליא On Erev Pesach! Today with Hashem's help we're going to start our shiur with a teaching from the great tzaddik, the mekubal, Rav Shimshon Me'Ostropolia. We're going to see a little bit about him, how he was able to decipher a teaching of the Arizal that for generations before him no one had been able to understand. Let's see how it goes. Rav Shimshon says, it’s a wonderful thing, a segulah, if you can learn this on erev Pesach. Whoever is going to study and delve into this, as it is proper to do, even once a year, specifically on erev Pesach, is promised that he will be saved in this upcoming year from any kind of untimely or horrible death. No one will be able to have control over you, and all your enemies will fall beneath you. You will be able to walk on their corpses. Wherever you turn you will be successful. Any business dealings you engage in will be successful, until the coming of Moshiach, amen selah. Rav Shimshon is writing, from Europe, a response to the great tzadikim of Eretz Yisrael, who had sent him a question: "Great Rabbis of Eretz Yisrael, who set up boundaries and stand strong in your teachings, each one with a sharp mind to ask and answer questions. We will be discussing a teaching of the AriZal in his pamphlet 'Pelois Rabbos, Many Wonders.' Specifically, the chapter on the Exodus from Egypt (Part 3, p. 42). (I'm letting you know now, that we're going to study these words, and nothing will make sense to us but as we go through the lesson, it will make a lot of sense.) These are the words of the Arizal: It is known that Pharaoh was punished in Mitzrayim with the 10 Plagues. We have 3,280 punishing angels, surrounding three firmaments of impurity. The first is called 'Shin-Reish-Ayin'; the second is 'Taf-Mem-Vov-Chof Sofis', and the third is called 'Beis-Yud-Shin-Hey-Alef.' And upon these three firmaments of impurity, there is one head angel called 'Daled-Lamed-Pey-Kuf-Tes,' more like the chairman of the board, and then there is the executive president, so to speak, on the top, the chief executive officer, 'Taf-Kuf-Alef.' (It makes no sense, but soon we will understand.) In the beginning we find that we are missing from three, ten. How is that possible? From four we are missing six, and from the ninth we are missing six, as it is written in the Torah." (Again, these are the exact words of the Arizal.) This, that we find the Egyptians were punished with the Ten Plagues, and on the sea they were punished with 50 Makkos, because of the name Shin-Pey-Vov which is attached to Dovid the son of Yishai. The name said, "Smite them," and they were smitten, they were hit. The Egyptians were hit in Egypt with 40 plagues, and on the sea with 200, and again the name (Hashem) said to smite, and they were hit, and by the name Shin-Tzadik-Hey the Egyptians were hit in Egypt with 50 plagues, and on the sea with 250; and Hashem said to smite, and they were hit, and they did punish. And with what Hashem caused the Makkos, the Exile was healed. What was their willful sin and what was their inadvertent sin? What did our forefathers do to be in this iron smelting pot? Until we were taken out by the names Daled-Ayin-Beis Tzaddik-Daled-Alef Shin-Ches-Beis." Until there is the language of the Arizal. (I'd like to tell you a side note, since we are seeing the words "bekor habarzel, the iron smelting pot" for Egypt. Why would the Jewish people be considered to be in a smelting pot? I saw something remarkable: "barzel" is hinting to the Jews, who come from ברזל, barzel. What does that mean, Jews come from iron? The letter ב stands for Bilhah, the ר stands for Rochel Imeinu, the ז s stands for Zilpah, and the ל stands for Leah Imeinu. We came from the four holy mothers of the 12 Tribes, and therefore we were being reworked, so to speak, and prepared to leave Mitzrayim to become the Chosen Nation.) Rav Shimshon continues: These words we just studied (of the Arizal) are wondrous. They are closed and locked and no one can explain them. But you great Rabbis ask me to explain them to you. They wanted to [explain them,] but it wasn't told to them. I will explain and reveal to you, what was revealed to me in this wondrous dream that I had. Chevrah, just hold on a little longer; Moshiach will be here at any moment. We are going through this deep galus, but just as we didn't understand how we would get out of Egypt, and Hashem saved us, He will save us from this galus.
