Originally a collection of 85 temples, the number has come down to 25. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temple complex is divided into three spheres: the Western, Eastern, and the Southern. The Western group consists of majority of temples. The Khajuraho Temples are majorly known for their erotic sculptures and carvings but there are similar sculptures at the Konark Sun temple in Odisha. Interestingly these sculptures have many theories to their existence and are based on the Hindu iconography and are a part of the core belief system which hinge around the four tenets of Hinduism: karma, dharma, kama, and moksha. Western Group of Temples consist of Kandariya Mahadeo temple, Lakshmana temple, Chausat Yogini temple, Jagadambi temple, Chitragupta temple, Matangeshwara temple, Vishwanath temple and Varaha temple opposite of the large Lakshman Temple are two small shrines. The one directly opposite is called Devi Mandap, its cemented peaked roof an indication that it has been renovated during the last century and VARAHA MANDAP and open pavilion stands to the south of the Devi shrine on a high platform. The mandap stands elevated above the ground with 14 short pillars that support the high pyramidal roof capped with an amalaka and kalash LAKSHMAN TEMPLE : This striking temple is one of the three largest temples of Khajuraho and the western group of temples and is considered to be the built in the earliest 9th century by the chandela rulers. It stands like a giant mountain of stone at the center, and is unique in Khajuraho for its four subsidiary shrines at the four corners of its rectangular platform. Each Subsidiary shrine has a little porch, band of sculpture along the exterior walls. KANDARIYA MAHADEV TEMPLE meaning the Great God of the Cave. It is the largest and grandest temple of Khajuraho. The elegant proportions of this building and its sculptural detailing are the most refined examples of this artistic heritage of central India. It shares its high platform with the Mahadev shrine and the Devi jagdambi Temple. As far as we know, after the Kandariya Mahaddev temple, the artist of Khajuraho never reattempted to build a structure so high or ornate. The exterior surfaces of the temples are entirely covered with sculptures in three vertical layers. There are niches where erotic sculptures are fitted around and is one of the major attraction among visitors. Do not miss the light and sound show at the Khajuraho Temple which is organized by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department. There are two shows available in two languages: English and Hindi. And the Khajuraho Temple timings for these shows are different for winters and summers.
