Dazaifu Tenmangu - Grand Procession of Michizane Sugawara

It’s been a great pleasure working with one of the most famous and historical Shinto shrines in Japan called, ’Dazaifu Tenmangu’.  We filmed the biggest and most historical festival ‘Jinkoshiki Taisai ( Grand Procession of Michizane Sugawara) which is held from every 21st to the 25th of September. Dazaifu Tenmangu Jinkoshiki Taisai is the largest matsuri of Fukuoka Prefecture’s Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, which is visited by around seven million people annually. The matsuri is held to pray for the divine will of Michizane and to give thanks for bumper crop harvests. A mikoshi (shrine float) carrying the deity is taken to Enokisha Shrine where Michizane once lived, and then it is returned to Dazaifu Tenmangu. It is protected by around 500 parishioners dressed in Heian period clothing. inkoshiki Taisai has transcended through time and space to current day in Fukuoka. Even though we are surrounded by the modern lifestyle, our heart and soul during this festival remains the same as always.
