2024 Freeride Madeira Day3

Starting near Estanquinhos Fontes Ruivas, we travelled a few miles along one of many of Madeira's networks of Levadas. Several long tunnels were navigated having to shuffle with the bike in darkness, to reveal an amazing vista surrounded by cliffs and dense vegetation. We descended one of Brendan Fairclough's favorite trails (albeit a lot slower!) and into the town of Sao Vicente for lunch. Afterwards we took the shuttle back up to the ancient Fanal Forest to see 2000+ year old trees and then descended the "secret" trail, extremely greasy mud, named "Madeira ice". The camera angle I used on the GoPro really shallows out the gradient here, it was 45% and exhausting. We finished at the Miradouro da Eira da Achada viewpoint for photos with our group. Thanks to the Surrey boys Ant, Jonny and Mike for making me welcome in their gang, and our new riding companions from Utah, Hannah, Rob and Connor.
