Constance Keene's 1980s recording of Rachmaninoff's Etudes Tableaux for the Protone label, which were recorded at Pepperdine University. She told Portuguese pianist Artur Pizarro that the entire set consists entirely of the first attempt she made of each work in the studio. As a teen in New York, Keene met Josef Hofmann, Leopold Godowsky, and Rachmaninoff, while as an adult through her husband (and former teacher) Abram Chasins - himself a pupil of Hofmann - became close with many pianists. She was a beloved teacher, and she and Chasins helped the young Van Cliburn prepare for his triumph in Moscow. Arthur Rubinstein, who could be judicious in his praise, is reported to have said of her Rachmaninoff Preludes that he was "flabbergasted by the colour, sweep and imagination and ... incredible technique. I cannot imagine anybody, including Rachmaninoff, playing the piano so beautifully." Keene taught his children - another sign of the high esteem in which she was held by this legendary colleague. Her playing here is superb. Keene was physically very small and thin - 'she ate like a bird' it has been said - but she not only produced a huge sound with beautiful tone but also phrased exquisitely, with an impeccable sense of taste and proportion.
