Klingnau stands out among the few ancient towns with its original charter, a barter agreement dating back to 26 December 1239, which remains preserved today. Designated in the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites of National Importance, Klingnau's medieval old town sits atop a hill, characterized by two rows of closely clustered houses encircling a central square in an oval configuration.
