Hidden in the arid landscape just south of Santa Fe, the Penitentiary of New Mexico (PNM) has long been a symbol of both confinement and chaos. While it’s known globally for the infamous 1980 prison riot, what followed in the decades after was a darker, more organized form of violence — gang wars that erupted behind its walls, leaving trails of blood and fear. As prison conditions worsened in the 1980s and 1990s, new power structures emerged. At the center was the rise of the Syndicato de Nuevo Mexico (SNM) — a prison gang born from the riot’s aftermath, determined to control every aspect of life inside. But SNM’s rule did not go unchallenged. Over the years, they clashed violently with rival gangs such as Los Carnales, the Aryan Brotherhood, the Border Brothers, and Native American inmate groups. These wars were fought over control of drug trafficking, extortion, racial dominance, and prison politics. The battles weren’t just between rival factions — they also reflected deeper issues: ethnic divisions, overcrowding, poor conditions, and systemic neglect. From ambushes on the yard to hit lists passed through cell doors, each gang war left behind casualties and a legacy of fear that prison staff and inmates still grapple with today. The gang wars at PNM are not just stories of violence — they are warnings of what happens when power, desperation, and identity collide inside concrete walls with no escape.
