Need help preparing for the General Chemistry section of the MCAT? MedSchoolCoach expert, Ken Tao, summarizes Periodic Trends content. Watch this video to get all the MCAT study tips you need to do well on this section of the exam! That first periodic trend that we reviewed was the electrostatic force. As we discussed, this increases as you go up and to the right on the periodic table. It is foundationally important, as several other periodic trends derive from and are proportional to the electrostatic force. This includes ionization energy, electron affinity, and electronegativity. Atomic radius is an exception, decreasing in proportion to the electrostatic force, or increasing going down and to the left along the periodic table. Our last trend, metallic character, can be related as well to other periodic trends. Non-metals exhibit high ionization energy, electron affinity, and electronegativity. Therefore, non-metals will primarily be located in the top right region of the periodic table. Therefore, metallic character must decrease moving up and to the right on the periodic table, and decrease moving down and to the left. Note the underlying physical and chemical explanations for each of the periodic trends, but most importantly, memorize which direction each trend moves. Most trends follow the electrostatic force in increasing up and to the right along the periodic table, while atomic radius and metallic character increase in the opposite direction, down and to the left. That knowledge will be sufficient for most MCAT questions testing periodic trends, so be sure to drill and memorize it!
