At Synhelion, we turn sunlight into fuel. We use renewable energy to produce sustainable fuels that can directly replace fossil fuels. These drop-in fuels are fully compatible with conventional engines, offering a powerful solution for sustainable transportation. So how does it work? The process starts with renewable energy, which powers our proprietary electric gas heater to generate high-temperature process heat. Part of this heat directly drives our proprietary thermochemical reactor. Here, we feed in water, carbon dioxide, and methane to produce syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The carbon dioxide and methane come from RED-certified biogenic waste, which is converted into raw biogas through anaerobic digestion in a standard biogas plant. During daytime, the part of the heat, which is not directly used in the reactor process, is stored in our cost-effective thermal energy storage. This storage allows the process to run day and night – even when the sun isn’t shining. Next, we convert the syngas into synthetic crude oil – or syncrude – using the Fischer-Tropsch process. This syncrude is then refined in standard refineries to produce renewable drop-in fuels, such as sustainable jet fuel for aircraft, diesel for ships and trucks, and gasoline for cars. Our renewable synthetic fuels are fully compatible with today’s global fuel infrastructure. By replacing fossil fuels with renewable fuels, Synhelion is contributing to a net-zero transportation sector.
