In the early 2000s, China had long been rife with Famiclones based on Nintendo hardware, and the Gameboy had flourished via parallel imports. Then there was the government, not the biggest fan of gaming at the best of times. And especially suspicious of foreign companies corrupting the youth. So gaming devices had to be marketed as study machines, to a semi-plausible excuse to exist. So despite a ‘ban’ Sony was gearing up to release the PS2 in China, Nintendo wasn’t about to miss out. IQue was released in Shanghai in November 2003 with high hopes of selling a million units.
