Human activities are inherently collaborative, sustained by support from multiple angles; people helping people. Although individuals may sometimes identify faults in others and choose to work alone, such isolation is contrary to human nature. When people come together in a circle, they conceptually become one entity; tasks undertaken within that circle become shared responsibilities. In this environment, individuals complement rather than compete with one another. Within the academic setting, faculty members are specialists in diverse disciplines. However, while a portion of their work is discipline-specific, another portion is general in nature. It is within these general academic responsibilities that faculty are expected to support one another. By assisting colleagues in these shared areas, faculty enable the effective completion of institutional tasks.
