Niagara Grapes aka White Concord Grape 9/16/24 Type: Seeded White Grape Fruit Size: Large Cluster Size: Medium (Smaller than Concord clusters) Skin: Slipskin Flavor: Tart Sweet Foxy Concord Flavor Harvest Date: Mid September in WA State (1-2 weeks earlier than Concords) considered mid season Recommended for juices and sweet wines Growing zone: 5 to 9 Tips: Niagara is not known as a high-quality wine grape as it tends to have an abundance of "foxy" flavors and aromas, especially when ripe; harvest at 14° brix or earlier for wine production. Niagara white wines lack the acid needed for good balance. Blending with a high-acid grape such as Catawba is recommended to improve the character of wines created with this variety. History: The Niagara grape was created in Niagara County, New York, in 1868 when Claudius L. Hoag and Benjamin W. Clark cross-bred Concord grapes with white Cassady grapes. It was first sold commercially in 1882. Niagara grapes are well known to most American consumers as the source of most white grape juice. Niagara grapes are considered to be poor shipping grapes, and so are usually only found near where they are grown.
