Today is career talk Saturday, where I dive into my career choice and hopefully enlighten some of you who are curious about Clinical Lab Science or Medical Lab Science (the name varies depending on where you live). This video is dedicated to a good chunk of my viewers who are currently in college and are wondering what career prospects you have as a Science major, or for people who want to be in healthcare but don't necessarily want to be in direct patient care. These were the reasons why I ultimately decided to become a Clinical Lab Scientist. Watching this video will show you that it was a very long and winding road for me to get to where I am. During the entire time I went to college (except CLS school), I was working at the same time and took a myriad of odd jobs just to get by. I also took loans for undergraduate and for CLS school (it was $13,000 for CLS school during my time but other programs are free). The amount of different jobs I took to get by, was directly proportional to the amount of times I switched majors. I came from the Philippines doing a year of nursing school. Then when I enrolled in the US at a community college, I switched to Pharmacy, but realized quickly that it wasn't practical for me (money and time wise) so I switched back to nursing. Then my grades and happiness just wasn't there although I knew in my heart that I was capable of learning more than this. So I took Microbiology as a prerequisite for nursing, and fell in love with it and immediately went to STEM counseling to find what career options I have if I switched my major to Microbiology. And although the classes were harder, I found joy and my grades and happiness dramatically improved. The rest is history, I finished school at the ripe old age of 27. I am here to remind you that wherever you are in life stick to your own timeline. Don't compare yourself to the success of others because that will fog up your path. If I gave up on my dreams because I kept looking at how my classmates back in the Philippines were already established doctors, while I was still working on my undergraduate degree, I never would have made it. I was so far behind everybody, but I focused on my own path and now I am glad to say that I am right where I always wanted to be. Working in a lab, with great coworkers and a great stable job, it was all worth it in the end. I hope this video inspires you and help you narrow down what career path you want to take. I wish you nothing but success in the future.
