Pineview Dam is located in the Ogden River Canyon, about 7 miles east of Ogden. Every year over 1 million people visit Pineview Reservoir in Ogden Valley, for water sports, fishing, even skating. But what makes all of this fun possible? A feat of human engineering: The Pineview Dam. At the height of the Great Depression, congress approved funds for this three-year construction project, aiming to build infrastructure and create jobs at the same time. Two locals, learning the dam was being built, found the decaying shell of an old dinghy and brought it home to refurbish it. People called them crazy, but they pulled it off! And the community honored the contraption at the dedication ceremony in 1937: it was the first boat to float on Pineview Reservoir. Today, dams in the West aren’t without controversy. But in 1937, the 4.7 million dollar project was hailed as a “Dream Come True” and a “Modern Miracle”. The dam boosted irrigation potential from 3,000 acres to 20,000. Weber County’s water comes from right here.
