This 1964 Gibson “Longneck” RB-175 banjo is part of the Instrument Collection from Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Studies at East Tennessee State University. Dr. Ted Olson from ETSU’s Department of Appalachian Studies demonstrates the instrument and talks about his history learning and performing folk music. The banjo donated to ETSU in March 2020 by Dr. Richard Davis, Professor Emeritus at University of San Francisco. The longneck five-string banjo was conceptualized by folk revivalist Pete Seeger. Vega introduced the Pete Seeger model in the 1950s with Gibson following soon afterward. Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Studies at East Tennessee State University is home to the world’s first-ever BA degree of its kind, with concentrations in Bluegrass Music Profession, Audio Production for Musicians, Old-Time Music, and Scottish and Irish Traditional Music. The Instrument Collection at ETSU includes historic and even one-of-a-kind “pre-war” instruments by Martin and Gibson. Contact us at bluegrass@etsu.edu
