Jian-Hwa is the heir to the Jian Estate, a massive dynasty that controls the empire’s iron mines and jade trade. He is also the last practitioner of the Ghost-Step Style, a martial art so fast it allows a warrior to move through rain without getting wet. Disillusioned by his family’s cutthroat greed, Jian-Hwa chooses to live as a lowly stable hand at a prestigious cavalry academy, tending to the horses of the nobility. The academy’s top student is Commander Kaito, a man from a minor noble house who is obsessed with status. Kaito treats Jian-Hwa as sub-human, making him lie face-down in the mud so Kaito can step on his back to mount his horse. Kaito mocks Jian-Hwa’s "animal smell" and "slow mind," often striking him with a riding crop to "teach him discipline." He tells the other students that "some are born to ride, and others are born to be ridden." The only person who treats him as an equal is Yuna, the academy’s stable-master’s daughter. She sees the gentle way Jian-Hwa handles the most aggressive stallions and realizes he has a "spirit connection" with the world. She brings him herbal salves for his bruises and teaches him the poetry she’s learned by eavesdropping on classes, never realizing she is reciting verses to the man who owns the very land the academy stands on. The Breaking Point The facade shatters during the Imperial Selection, a combat tournament held before the Emperor. A group of Rogue Ronin, seeking to assassinate the Emperor, infiltrates the arena. Kaito, terrified by real combat, flees behind a pillar, leaving Yuna trapped in the path of the assassins. Jian-Hwa moves. To the crowd, he is a blur—a "Ghost" in a stable hand’s tunic. He disarms five men in the time it takes for a single heartbeat. Using only a wooden lead rope, he strikes with the force of a thunderbolt, neutralizing the Ronin with precise pressure point strikes. When the smoke clears, he is standing over the fallen assassins, not a single speck of dust on his ragged clothes. The Reckoning The Price: The Emperor’s Guard enters and bows to the "stable hand." Jian-Hwa reveals his true identity and buys the academy on the spot. His first act is to expel Kaito and ban him from ever carrying a blade in the empire again, sentencing him to work the stables he once looked down upon. The Reward: Jian-Hwa reveals himself to Yuna. He grants her family ownership of the Jian jade mines and invites her to travel the Silk Road with him as his equal, telling her, "You treated a servant like a king; now let a king show you the world."
