Located in the county of Berkshire, and around 20 miles west of central London, is the town of Windsor. The known history of Windsor goes back to 1070 - the year in which William the Conqueror ordered the construction of a motte and bailey castle here. However, an earlier settlement predates this event by hundreds of years, namely the village of Old Windsor around three miles downstream from here, which is thought to have been inhabited since as early as circa 600 AD. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle recorded it as 'Windlesora', which derives from Old English for 'winch by the riverside', or 'winding riverside'. Whilst Old Windsor was once home to a Saxon palace, its significance was eventually eclipsed by the castle of the 'new' Windsor. The first monarch to use it as a royal residence was Henry I from the year 1110. The castle was rebuilt in stone by Henry II in the late 12th century, including the addition of the famous Round Tower. Several further additions were made by Henry III in the early 13th century including the Salisbury Tower, the Garter Tower, the Curfew Tower and the namesake Henry III Tower. In 1312 the future king Edward III was born at Windsor Castle. In 1348, 21 years into his reign, he founded the Order of the Garter - the oldest order of chivalry in the land. This initially consisted of Edward and 25 knights, including his son Edward the Black Prince. This tradition continues on to the present day, with members attending an annual Garter Day procession and service at Windsor. In 1475 Edward IV founded St George's Chapel. Located within Windsor Castle, this became the Chapel of the Order of the Garter, and the resting place for 11 monarchs from Edward IV himself and his rival king during the Wars of the Roses, Henry VI, to Elizabeth II. In 1642 Windsor Castle was breached for the first and only time in its history, when Oliver Cromwell captured it for Parliament after the Battle of Edgehill. The castle was later used as a prison for Charles I prior to being taken to London for trial and execution. Charles was returned to Windsor to be interred at St George's Chapel. During the 1820s Windsor Castle underwent extensive rebuilding work under the orders of George IV. The architect responsible was Sir Jeffry Wyatville, who is also known for his work on Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. Among its changes was the heightening of the Round Tower by 30 feet (9 metres). Today, Windsor Castle is the world's largest occupied castle. Other notable architectural highlights of the town include Windsor Guildhall (first seen just before the 11-minute mark), which was designed by Sir Thomas Fitch in the 1680s. Fitch died prior to the completion of the building, and its design is said to have been completed by Sir Christopher Wren, though his involvement is disputed. Just next to the guildhall is Market Cross House, otherwise known as The Crooked House of Windsor. This dates from 1687 - around the exact same time as Windsor Guildhall. An earlier building stood here from 1592, but was torn down to make way for the guildhall. After a legal dispute, it was ordered to be reconstructed to appear just the way it was, so the legend goes at least! Across the road from these two is St John the Baptist Church, which was built in the 1820s to replace an earlier church which had fallen into disrepair. In 1849 the railway arrived in Windsor, first with the opening of Windsor & Eton Central station in October, and then Windsor & Eton Riverside station in December. Windsor & Eton Central is the southern terminus of a short branch line connecting to Slough on the Great Western Main Line. Windsor & Eton Riverside is the northwestern terminus of the Staines-Windsor Line, which provides a direct route to Waterloo Station in London. In 1996 Legoland Windsor opened.
