Youghiogheny River Lower Yough Gauge 2.39 Whitewater Kayaking This is a "guide" in the sense of how to guide your friend down novice lines on the Lower Yough. It is not a substitute for knowing the river, having competent paddling skills, having and knowing how to use the proper equipment, or having a good crew that is capable of helping each other in the event of an on-river issue. We started with a safety briefing, including hand and whistle signals. We have a large, experienced crew. There is a safety plan in place, and I have asked a couple of the crew to keep an eye on her as she follows me. This particular video is me leading my partner down the Lower Yough. We paddled the Nantahala a few weeks ago, and after that experience, we decided a ducky would be a better boat for her on the Lower Yough than a hard-shell kayak. She knows how to paddle a kayak, but it seemed like a ducky would be more confidence-inspiring (this proved to be true). We took easy lines through every rapid, with the obvious exception of Swimmers. By the time we got there, she was doing well enough to punch the hole. And given the limited maneuverability of a ducky vis-a-vis a kayak, it made more sense to punch the hole instead of trying to make the green tongue on river right. She also missed a few of the easy lines and punched holes that I went around - in particular at Cucumber, Double Hydro, and River's End where she went right over Snaggletooth (the level was fluffy enough that it didn't matter for her, although a kayaker who did the same broke their paddle). Have fun and be safe out there! For anyone who wants to see the line at Dimple, I linked to another Lower Yough where I run Dimple. The portage is the safe and easy line there. Be aware of the risk you are taking and the consequences of making a mistake there before you run it! 00:00 Lower Yough, 2.39 01:23 Entrance 04:00 Cucumber 05:02 Piddly 05:34 Camel-Walrus 05:59 Eddy Turn 06:47 Dartmouth 07:55 Railroad 09:08 Fun in the Flat Water 10:07 Dimple 10:38 Swimmers 11:46 Bottle of Wine 12:41 Double Hydraulics 13:37 River's End 15:58 School House 16:24 Maze 17:35 Bruners Run 18:27 Take Out
