Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs’ Weekly Update TRANSCRIPT: “It’s Friday. Time for another weekly update. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Knox P.A.W.S. pet food drive. Because of your generous support, we collected over 940 pounds of pet food and more than $400 in monetary donations. Also, a big thank you to our libraries and senior centers, who played a huge role in making this possible. Turns out that Knox County is not only the best place to live, work, and raise a family. We’re also a great place for pets! Last Friday was our annual chili cookoff. Congratulations to the McClung Library staff, who took home first place with their Historic Full House Chili with Tamale, which was based on a recipe from 1901. Fun fact: Back in the early 1900s, Knoxville was known for serving chili with tamales. While the event was a lot of fun, it also supported a great cause, raising almost $1,000 for Habitat for Humanity. Thank you to Petro’s, who sponsored the cookoff, my fellow judges, contestants, and participants. The Knoxville Smokies will host a job fair this Saturday. The Smokies, One Knoxville SC, and Professional Sports Catering are looking to fill a variety of part-time and seasonal positions. The job fair will be held from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the Knoxville Area Urban League, 1514 East Fifth Ave. For more information, call the Smokies front office at 865-286-2300. Speaking of the Smokies, they will be hosting their first game at their new home, Covenant Health Park, on April 15 versus the Chattanooga Lookouts. This is a historic event, and tickets are going fast. The third annual Camporee will be held from Friday, April 25th to Sunday, April 28th at Melton Hill Park. The camping event will feature interactive nature programming for both kids and adults, a sunset movie, a local band campfire jam session, water sport rentals, and some of the most beautiful views in the area. The event is free but open only to Knox County residents, and you must register in advance. To register, please visit the Parks and Recreation activities page at knoxcounty.org/parks. Finally, the first leg of this year’s Read City USA challenge, Curious Minds, ends on March 16, but there’s still time to earn prizes. Go to ReadCityUSA.com for more information. Until next Friday, I hope everyone has a great week!”
