This video is part of a series that works hand-in-hand with Inclusive: A Microsoft Design Toolkit. The intent is to support designers and developers to innovate in a way that puts humans first, on a universal scale. In this video, we see how the Xbox team at Microsoft empowers gamers, most especially those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. It's more about watching people of different abilities go through common gaming scenarios, says August de Los Reyes, Xbox design director. As John Porter explains, "Inclusive design isn't about disability. It's about creating a design process that is in service of all users.". Other team members, like Joanna Mason and Lauren White, leaned into bringing in Subject Matter Experts to give design empathy and drive better design outcomes. They share insights from a design sprint where ideas like putting emojis in the virtual keyboard to find better representations of feeling were devolved for Deaf gamers. Nick Robinson pointed out the impact of constructing features like clubs, letting gamers assemble together based on interests or needs, like being Deaf. This would help bridge gaps in meeting each other with similar social and emotional needs common among gamers, not just with a specific particular disability. The video reflects on the extended impact of a greater design and how Microsoft is empowering and delivering technology to shape the future of gaming and to make a better quality of life for all.
