The former Soviet Union also tried something similar, with the famous Kola Superdeep Well, which reached 12,262 meters deep, becoming the deepest hole ever drilled by man. In the midst of the Cold War, a silent battle was taking place far from the public eye. While the United States and the Soviet Union were competing in the space race, trying to reach the Moon, another competition was taking place in the opposite direction: the race to drill the deepest hole in the Earth. The goal? To reach the most unknown layers of the planet, reveal geological secrets, discover new forms of life and, who knows, even touch the Earth's mantle, something that had never been done before. That was how, in 1970, the Soviet Union began the project that would go down in history as the Kola Superdeep Well, one of the greatest feats of engineering and geological science. On May 24, 1970, the Soviets began drilling into the ground of the Kola Peninsula, a remote region in northwestern Russia. Equipped with advanced technology for the time, scientists and engineers set out to face a monumental challenge: to drill as deep into the Earth's crust as possible.
