Latium, presently recognized as the region of Lazio in modern Italy, was home to a dynamic blend of early inhabitants. The indigenous tribes that initially inhabited the region were mainly of Indo-European origin, who traveled via eastern Europe into the Italian Peninsula around the 2nd millennium BC. This movement marked the arrival of the proto-Italic tribes, notably the Latins, who settled in the region that would later take their name. The Latins, believed to be semi-nomadic pastoralists, eventually established small communities which grew over the centuries into a collection of city-states, the most prominent of which was Alba Longa. However, the region of Latium was not isolated from external influences or migrations. The Etruscans, a sophisticated and enigmatic civilization from the north, exercised considerable control and influence over Latium from 8th Century BC. They conducted trade, introduced writing system based on Greek alphabet and played a significant role in urbanizing Latium. Their cultural influence on the native Latins was so profound that it resulted in hybridized Etrusco-Latin settlements. Moreover, southern parts of Latium were also infiltrated by Greek colonists, which added to the rich cultural mosaic of the region. The cross-cultural interactions led to an exchange of sociopolitical, economic, and religious practices - creating a unique, vibrant civilization that laid the groundwork for the eventual rise of Rome, one of Latium's, and history's most influential cities.
