I’m going to do my survival tips in bullet points this week: 1) START THE DAY WARM, it’s so hard to heat yourself up if you start off cold. Do this through wearing lots of layers & taking a shred-friendly rucksack. 2) WEAR SUNBLOCK. Reapply at lunch. 3) DECIDE ON A MEET UP PLACE in case you get lost. This can be a café or lunch spot or obvious resort landmark. Ideally, you’d also do this at the start of each run, especially with kids. 4) DON’T LET THE WILD ONES GO AHEAD. Mountains have cliffs, drops, waterfalls and all sorts of hazards you might not be aware of. 5) GET YOUR KNOWLEDGE UP FOR OFF PISTE. No excuses. Take a course in a resort, get the right kit and know how to use it. I also make a point of asking locals, say in shops and hire spots such as Intersport (who also offer massive savings if you hire kit online in advance use the promo code MSST: https://www.intersport-rent.fr/) how the conditions are on the mountain. 6) PUT EMERGENCY NUMBERS IN YOUR PHONE. It’s 112 not 999 for an emergency in Europe, but on the mountain you really want Mountain Rescue. French resorts will have their own Mountain rescue numbers through the PGHM. 7) MAKE SURE YOUR PHONE IS CHARGED. Following on from point 6). Use low battery mode if you’re worried it’s running out, better still take a battery pack to recharge. 8) USE WHATSAPP TO KEEP TRACK OF YOUR GROUP. This is a great feature and way to not lose friends or family on the mountain (those old enough to have phones anyway…). You simply share your live location in a WhatsApp chat thread. 9) TAKE ENERGY-FILLED SNACKS AND WATER. Flapjacks, cereal bars, protein ball type stuff, buy a load at the supermarket in case of emergencies or just mountain hunger. 10) USE PISTE MARKERS IN A WHITEOUT and follow them home to safety. The piste markers with an orange top on them are the ones on the right-hand side (so don’t go further right than them). The numbers also descend as you get closer to the resort which is helpful to know. #edleighsmoneysavingsnowtips #edsnowtips
