In this video, Dr. Mark Mason, a board-certified plastic surgeon with 20 years of experience, explains the safety of today's silicone breast implants and the pros and cons of the different implants. Saline implants are filled with a saline solution similar to saltwater. The solution is not unlike tears or sweat. If the implant were to leak, it would be absorbed into the body. The leak would be detectable by a reduction in breast size as the solution was absorbed. Silicone breast implants are filled with a medical-grade silicone gel. This gives the implant a firmer, more natural feel and better mimics actual breast tissue. If a leak develops in a silicone implant it is not absorbed by the body. Instead, it stays in place due to its cohesive properties until the implant can be changed. Should a rupture of the implant occur, the outcome will be similar to a leak. Saline will be absorbed and the implant shell will need to be removed. The silicone gel will stay together, along with the shell, until the implant can be removed or changed. Let Dr. Mark Mason and his team at Southlake Plastic Surgery and Medical Spa, located in Southlake, TX, show you the benefits of silicone and saline breast implants, and answer any questions you have about the safety of the implants.
