Svalbard, or Spitsbergen as it is also known is one the places warming up the fastest - 5 times more than average of the planet, the glaciers are retreating fast. Svalbards has about 1100 different glaciers, and many of them ending out in the ocean - which is important habitat for the wildlife as it creates upwelling and cold water refuge. As more and more glaciers retreat up on land, this habitat is about to disappear in Svalbard. This particular even is Kronebreen in inner Kongsfjorden near the famous scientific settlement of Ny Ålesund. This glaciers is one of the fastest retreating glaciers in Svalbard. Filmed handheld from a zodiac with excited guests onboard, so I appollogize for the somewhat shaking footage. This calving event went on for about 11 minutes. Filmed 1st September 2023.
