(19 Nov 2014) Relatives of missing people in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero underwent DNA tests on Tuesday to determine whether any of the bodies found in mass graves during the search of 43 missing students are those of their loved ones. Hundreds of people gathered in the city of Iguala to take DNA tests carried out by an initiative called "Citizens Forensic Science" which is promoted by a group of relatives of missing people in Mexico. Organisers of the initiative now want to match those samples taken on Tuesday with those of dozens of unidentified bodies found in mass graves that were recently discovered. Authorities confirmed that none of the bodies found in the mass graves belong to those of the 43 students who disappeared after they were attacked by police in Iguala on September 26. Police officers are alleged to have turned the students over to the Guerreros Unidos drug cartel. Authorities believe the students were murdered, their bodies burned near a municipal garbage dump and their remains thrown into a river. Meanwhile, the newly appointed president of Mexico's National Committee on Human Rights condemned the disappearance of the students. At his first news conference, Luis Raul Gonzalez said he will request a meeting with the families of the missing students. Mexicans across the country reacted with outrage to the disappearance of the students and claimed that the government's response failed to fully explain what happened.
